A growing index of carbon activity
The Carbon Index is a continuously expanding collection of carbon-related measurements drawn from public and industrial sources.
CarbonWorks acquires, qualifies, and organizes these observations into a structured index. Today the index contains 619 qualified measurement windows spanning 24 signal classes across three observation sources.
Every published measurement includes its observation count, its confidence, and its provenance.
Energy production
The largest portion of the index measures energy production — 609 measurement windows across 15 signal classes, spanning January 2023 to June 2026 at a mean confidence of 0.99.
Current coverage includes coal and petroleum production, with additional energy indicators added as new datasets are qualified.
Atmospheric observation
Atmospheric measurements provide the longest historical record in the index — 7 measurement windows across 6 signal classes, reaching back to March 2004, at a mean confidence of 0.95.
Smaller in volume, but these observations carry historical context the energy series cannot.
Industrial operations
Industrial operational measurements describe plant activity and industrial state — 3 measurement windows at a mean confidence of 0.73.
These are published with their confidence intact rather than averaged into higher-confidence sources. Where a measurement is thin, it is published thin.
Coverage
Coverage expands continuously as new carbon-related datasets are qualified. The index currently spans observations from March 2004 through June 2026.
Different sources contribute different historical depth, update frequency, and confidence. CarbonWorks reports actual coverage rather than implying uniform completeness. How windows and confidence are constructed is described on the Method page.
What the index does
The Carbon Index organizes carbon-related information into a common structure, preserves provenance for every published measurement, reports confidence alongside every published value, provides a consistent view across multiple data providers, and supports research, software, and industrial applications.
It does not forecast future conditions, provide financial advice, recommend policy, or replace the original source data. Its purpose is to organize and publish traceable measurements of observed carbon activity.

The website. The index is currently published as this site. Measurements, coverage, and documentation are browsable here.
That is the whole of what is available today, and it is stated plainly because a published capability that does not exist is the failure this index is built to avoid.
Access — planned
The following are in development and not yet available:
- a developer API for programmatic access - scheduled data exports for internal analysis and reporting - an email newsletter summarising newly qualified datasets and expanded coverage - commercial subscriptions with expanded capabilities
